WHMIS

WHMIS - Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System Training - FAQ's

Who needs WHMIS training?

Any worker who works with or in proximity to a controlled product needs to be trained in WHMIS.

How often do I need re-certification?

The Occupational Health and Safety Act states that all training must be reviewed annually to ensure your employees know, retain, and follow the WHMIS guidelines.

How long does the course take?

On average the course takes 1 hour to complete.

Why computer based training?

  • Computer based training and specifically on-line training provides consistency while allowing flexibility. It allows an employer to use unexpected down time in a productive and cost effective manner.
  • Training can be provided 24 hours a day to employees everywhere in the country and not just in the training room, removing the hassles of arranging training facilities, trainers and production down time for groups of employees.
  • By using a database driven system, it provides a means of testing the knowledge of participants and documenting those results. Documentation is provided in a consistent and legally usable manner.
  • What do I do if I forgot to print my certificate or if I lost it?
  • You can reprint your certificate by going to Certificate Reprint and entering the username and password you used to take the course.
What is a Training Seat?

A training seat is a single training course for one person – literally the equivalent of one seat in a classroom for a single course. A seat is enabled when an individual is provided with a username and password.  You require one training seat for each individual who takes a training course.

What are the system requirements?
  • A PC or Macintosh computer built within the past five years
  • Video card and display capable of displaying 800x600 resolution or better (lower resolution works but will require a lot of scrolling)
  • Flash Player (free download available)
  • A sound card and speakers or headphones
  • Any of the most popular web browsers.
  • An Internet connection, preferably high-speed.
What does the training cover?

The training module is designed to comply with the "generic" or general components of Federal and Provincial WHMIS Legislation. It is designed to meet the needs of both employers and employees.

NOTE: This program has NOT been designed to replace the Workplace Specific elements of the legislated requirements of WHMIS.

There are four elements or segments to the training:
  • Background and explanation of the WHMIS Legislation
  • Hazards
  • Workplace Labels
  • Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)
